Ceramic Magnet (also called Ferrite magnet) is made from a composite of iron oxide and barium carbonate or strontium carbonate which is sintered by compacting the fine alloy powder in a die and then fusing it with heat into solid material.
Due to their high coercive force they are classified as hard materials (or hard ferrites), as are other permanent magnets including Neodymium, Samarium Cobalt and Alnico. Permanent Ferrite Magnets can be used in temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius. They are the most common permanent magnets in use today.
Unlike Neodymium magnets which have a polished silver coating, Ferrite magnet, also known as Ceramic Magnet, has a dark-grey colour and stain under friction.
Ferrite Permanent Magnets are stronger than Alnico magnets, however, they are a lot weaker than Sintered Neodymium Magnet. The weaker properties of Ceramic Ferrite Magnet makes it safer around electronic devices like pacemakers and hearing aids and less likely to interfere with their operation.
Key characteristics of ceramic permanent magnets include excellent magnetization abilities, demagnetization resistance, and corrosion resistance, good magnetic strength, and fair high-temperature resistance. These qualities have led to them becoming the top pick for many magnetic technologies, including automobile sensors, DC motors, and MRI machines.
